What to Expect

An opportunity to make your art away from the pace of everyday life. The Casa Romero artist residency in the mountains of Boyacá, Colombia is designed to help you slow down, reconnect, and return to yourself—through restorative space to create, delicious food, and time to simply be.

❋ A Supportive Space

As one of two artists in residence at any given time, you will have all the time and space you need to create at your own pace. Provided with three meals a day, and unlimited access to the nearby waterfall, walking trails, and rivers.

Casa Romero’s artist residency program is informed by our founder’s own experiences as a writer who is deeply inspired and nourished by the mountains, rivers, animals, trees, and water all around us in this beautiful wilderness.

Casa Romero is an Indigenous land back project founded by Rosa Blumenfeld-Romero of the Muisca people. Your artist residency supports this vision for Indigenous liberation and self determination.

❋ Nature & Art Immersion

We are located next to a gorgeous nature preserve with walking trails, waterfalls, swimming holes, and a river. Villa de Leyva, Boyacá is a small town and artist colony with the Muisca Sub Observatory, Fossil Museums, and small art galleries.

What Sets Our Arts Residency Apart

01 / Create Outside

Create your art inspired by the mountain right on the mountain. Studio space includes one small wooden cabin with mountain views for those who need a separate work space and one open air balcony in front of the renovated shipping container where one artist would be living. 02 / Indigenous Sovereignty

All art is political. Create in a place where your vision for the world and your vision for your art align with Indigenous sovereignty as part of this land back project.

03 / Freedom

With no set itinerary or host obligations, you are free to set your own schedule and make your art in peace. With all the time and space to work, take a walk, or take a nap, it is yours to decide. Should you need a cheerleader, listening ear, or just a friend, our founder and fellow artist Rosa Blumenfeld-Romero is here on site.

How It Works

  • This artist residency is for writers, filmmakers, visual artists, textile artists, and musicians.

    • 1 month of lodging, working space, and three meals per day at Casa Romero

    • Unlimited access to local nature and waterways at Casa Romero and neighboring properties.

    • Airport pick up and drop off.

    • Outdoor and indoor multi purpose lodging and studio space.

    • Airfare to and from Colombia

    • Shipping costs for artist supplies

    • Any tourist activities or meals outside of Casa Romero

    • Transportation to and from Casa Romero outside of one time airport pick up and drop off

    • Health or other emergency costs

  • We are located at ~8000 feet or 2400 meters above sea level. Temperatures range from 10 degrees celsius or 50 degree fahrenheit to 25 degrees celsius or 77 degrees fahrenheit. Please bring layers and be prepared for bouts of rain in the middle of the day.

  • Yes we welcome artists and their families for additional fees ($18/day per family member, and $7/day for children 6 or under). The renovated shipping container has a bunk bed with space for a partner and up to 2 children. The yurt had a double bed with space for a partner and a small mattress on the floor for a child. Please contact us for more information.

    Getting pets in and out of Colombia is both expensive and time consuming. Given the remote location of Casa Romero we cannot accommodate them during an artist residency.

  • Casa Romero offers two housing options: a renovated shipping container with its own private bathroom with wifi and hot water. It overlooks the valley with a private balcony that also serves as an outdoor studio space.

    The second is a private yurt with a smaller balcony, wifi, and private bathroom with hot water. You will also have access to a small wooden cabin as a studio space.

    Both artists will have access to the wifi, balcony, and living room of the main house where our founder Rosa Blumenfeld-Romero works and lives.

  • We are next to the Tucanes Nature Preserve near the town of Gachantivá, Boyacá. Neighboring properties also have waterfalls, swimming holes, and river access. About an hour away is the town of Villa de Leyva, a colonial town and artist haven. You can catch a ride with Rosa when she goes into town, or pay for motorcycles and buses to get around.

Meet Our Artist Founder: Rosa Blumenfeld-Romero

Rosa Blumenfeld-Romero is a writer, educator, and founder of Reclaiming Indigeneity LLC and Casa Romero, a decolonization retreat center and land back project. Her writing explores reclaiming her Indigenous Muisca roots as someone raised Colombian and Jewish. Drawing on the “coming home” framework learned from Native elders and Indigenous mentors, she teaches others to undo the effects of assimilation and embody Indigenous values.

Trained as a popular educator in the Paulo Freire tradition during her years as a union organizer (2006–2014), Rosa has delivered decolonization curricula to teens in Boston Public Schools, adults in Boston Public Libraries, and audiences across Jewish communities and BIPOC spaces. She serves as a racial justice partner and certified Mikveh Guide at Mayyim Hayyim Living Waters, where she authored the ceremonies In Solidarity with Indigenous Communities and For Palestinian Life, and co-authored In Generational Gratitude for Jewish Women of Color.

She is currently writing Underprotected and Overexposed, a memoir weaving personal story with decolonization teachings.

Rosa holds a degree in Peace and Conflict Studies and Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations from the University of Toronto.
