No Sabo No More
1 Week Spanish Immersion in Villa de Leyva, Colombia
Spanish Language Reclamation As Resistance
Language Reclamation Is Resistance For Us All
Language is where we tell our creation stories, share our values, and show our love for our families, our people, and the places we come from. Learning how to speak Spanish is not only a way back to our roots as children and grandchild of Latin immigrants but to our culture and traditions as well. English is not our first language, and now it is time that we remember that. Time to come home and belong.
Every decision we make is shaped by a clear sense of purpose.
What began as a passion project has evolved into something more. We’re proud of where we’ve been and even more excited for what’s ahead. What sets us apart isn’t just our process—it’s the intention behind it. We take time to understand, explore, and create with purpose at every turn.
Who We Are
-
We learn by doing. Whether we are weaving traditional baskets out of straw or swimming at the nature spring water pool, we use our environment as our classroom. Using an Indigenous language acquisition model as our foundation, we practice speaking and listening while we develop new skills in a new place.
-
Curiosity, perseverance, and support guide everything that we do. Your mind will make intuitive connections as you grapple for words, your accent doesn’t matter, and you will always get the encouragement to keep trying. We don’t care how long it takes or that you get it ‘right’, just that you keep going. You are smarter than you think.
-
So many of us who are the children of immigrants from Mexico on down lose our Spanish being raised in the English dominance of North America. We couldn’t speak to our abuelas, felt embarassed about ordering our own people’s food, and were made fun of sometimes at the family BBQ. Learning Spanish gives us access to a whole new layer of who we are and the tools to make decisions in our next steps to reclaim who we are from there.

None. We simply ask you to be willing to fully participate in the immersion model, and work through moments of stress or discomfort when you are trying to figure out how to communicate.
Do I need to speak English to come to this immersion camp?
Yes. This is a bilingual immersion where we are learning from English to Spanish.
Does it matter if I understand more than I speak?
No. Our Indigenous teaching model will give you confidence to have real conversations.
Who is this Spanish immersion week for?
We will centre non-Spanish speaking descendants of Latin immigrants who want to reclaim our roots, but it is open to all.
Will I have a roommate?
If you are a solo traveler, yes. Couple or families, no.
Will I have a choice in the room or roommate selection process?
